The issue of migration is one of the most controversial in recent history. Sicily is a border area that experiences, on a daily basis, the tragedy that is the plight of countless boatloads of migrants arriving on the island’s shores. The Abadir Academy, a design school based in Sicily, decided to launch an investigation into the phenomenon of migration. The starting point of the project is an extensive collection of data that the wider field of design has created on the topic. This student research project develops five topics, which will be represented in the exhibition through various media: material deprivation and the ground zero of survival; emergency and welcome practices; state of suspension, between the loss of citizenship and the undetermined status of the migrant; spiritual identity of migrants and the possibility of a multi-religious space/tent for refugee camps; and relationships between migrants and volunteers through an online platform where they can share needs and solutions.
