One of the consequences of the domination of the human species on this planet is also the emergence of the so called non-indigenous invasive plants. Their exceptional vitality and the ability to grow quickly give them the power to uncontrollably conquer and ravage numerous areas that were changed by human activities. With symbiocene, a utopian prototype of an urban ecosystem, the designers create an opportunity to learn and actively design new inter-species synergies within the damaged nature. The quickly growing compositions of Ailanthus altissima (Tree of Heaven) are recognized as the production surplus of modern ecosystems and are turned into beehives to serve as a means for changing competitive relations into symbiotic ones. Extensive farming has made cities a safer place for bees than rural regions, therefore urban beekeeping plays an important role in the conservation of bee species that are the guardians of our food chains and maintain biodiversity. Urban beehives serve as a research tool for questioning how and with whom to collaborate to build a diverse web of life and exchange in future ecosystems.
